Why do so many marketing companies fail at marketing themselves?

Recently, I decided to upskill and source some marketing training from local marketing companies. In my personal opinion, I think it’s always a good idea to keep learning and in the fast-paced marketing world, I don’t want to risk getting left behind.

So, I did a quick Google search and it came up with about 10 different marketing companies in my local area. On every company website, I was bombarded with extraordinary claims to fame, outstanding stats, and case studies (has every marketing company worked for Google/Amazon?) that advertised each company as being the best.

Being a marketer means that you often easily see through the ‘bullshit’ so these claims to fame didn’t really do it for me. Instead, as a social media marketer and content executive, my first exploration takes place on social channels.

Why? because if you’re as good as you claim to be then your social media should follow. A companies brand marketing should be the absolute cream of the crop. Amazing and educated.

What do I find? 9/10 marketing companies with subpar social networks. I’d like to note, I don’t care about the follower count, I care about the content created.

The Argument

A company that can’t even market itself properly simply isn’t a company I trust. Charity starts at home and so does marketing.

Now some may argue that these companies don’t have time to market themselves because they are busy working for their clients. And I agree with this statement partly.

Sure time might be tight but the absolute lack of any valuable content is unacceptable.

I’m not looking for posts every 5 hours. I’m looking for a real example of your skills in action. If you say you can create amazing Reels, then show me. If you say you can create viral content, then show me. If you say you can do social media marketing, then show me.

At this point you might be saying “But Amy they do it for their clients” and my response is — well how do I know? It’s not like marketing companies stick their logo on the content they create for other companies. For all I know the case studied could be false and the stats fabricated.
